Education Starts at Home Not at School

During these past five years as a Dad I have seen my daughter grow from a baby to a five year-old that likes to sing and spin around, jumps like a popcorn on a hot skillet, and enjoys asking me questions about anything. It has been an amazing period in my life. Lately, I noticed that she is more aware of her environment, she has become a sponge for knowledge, she likes to learn new words and numbers, she is capable of vocalizing each of her favorite songs after listening to it on the radio, mostly from animated movies she watched before. She has developed further in just the past six months, her vocabulary has increased, sometimes I even have a hard time explaining unexpected questions from her, I am enjoying this change and I am having fun in the process. Now, mind you that I have a full time job and a two-hour commute (back and forth). She goes to pre-K school, every day, for four hours. I keep an eye on the assignments she brings from school, I ask her teachers about her progre...

Combating Stress With Coloring Books for Adults

Stress is normal but... The stressful lives in the cities leave little room for creativity and self-satisfaction.  Activities for most people are directed at efficiency and productivity in an environment that makes clear that the trade-off is money and not a real belonging to the success of any enterprise. Money cannot buy everything, and what it buys is meaningless if the cost for obtaining it deprives us of our sense of humanity. On the other hand, today people are affected by the consequences of the recent financial crisis. We are feeling unsafe and insecure without access to basic needs such as jobs, health care, a pension fund, and recreation.   Stress is part of our lives, it has always been. Our bodies are capable of handling stress and making it part of the tools that enable us to advance in both boring and demanding tasks. When we perceive an event as stressful our bodies react with a complex of emotional, psychological and physiological responses than in the anc...

Indoor Edible Gardening

Let’s face it, we all need fresh vegetables in our diets for healthy bodies. The food we harvest from our own outdoor summer gardens is cheaper, tastes better, and is less likely to be genetically modified than the food we buy at the store. Then the winter sets in, and our beautiful garden dies off. We are forced to by our produce in the grocery store. These edibles have probably been shipped halfway across the country or even imported. This produce may have been picked several days ago, may have been picked too early to taste good, or may have even been genetically modified to stay fresher while being shipped. Maybe this is you standing in the produce isle wishing for spring planting season, or maybe, you don’t even have the luxury of a summer garden in your urban dwelling and you just wish you had an opportunity to grow your own fresh produce. Why not grow your garden indoors? It’s not as impossible or as expensive as you think to create an indoor garden. Some people don’t grow a ...

Can You Discover A Brain Birth Defect Later In Life?

A brain Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) is a tangle of abnormal blood vessels connecting arteries and veins in the brain. A brain AVM can look a little like seaweed on the bottom of the ocean, where all the vessels are tangled up with each other. Symptoms usually occur as early as 10 years old, right up to 40. Over time, brain AVM’s damage brain tissue. Once a person reaches middle-aged, the AVM usually doesn't cause any problems. Researchers believe that AVM’s are present from fetal development, but can stay dormant for many years, and may never show themselves. Normally, the heart sends oxygenated blood to your brain through arteries. Arteries slow blood flow by passing it through a series of progressively smaller networks of blood vessels, ending with capillaries, which slowly deliver oxygen through walls to the surrounding tissues. The organ depleted blood then passes into small blood vessel's and into larger veins that drain blood from the brain and returns it to...
