Education Starts at Home Not at School

During these past five years as a Dad I have seen my daughter grow from a baby to a five year-old that likes to sing and spin around, jumps like a popcorn on a hot skillet, and enjoys asking me questions about anything. It has been an amazing period in my life. Lately, I noticed that she is more aware of her environment, she has become a sponge for knowledge, she likes to learn new words and numbers, she is capable of vocalizing each of her favorite songs after listening to it on the radio, mostly from animated movies she watched before. She has developed further in just the past six months, her vocabulary has increased, sometimes I even have a hard time explaining unexpected questions from her, I am enjoying this change and I am having fun in the process. Now, mind you that I have a full time job and a two-hour commute (back and forth). She goes to pre-K school, every day, for four hours. I keep an eye on the assignments she brings from school, I ask her teachers about her progre...

Combating Stress With Coloring Books for Adults

Stress is normal but... The stressful lives in the cities leave little room for creativity and self-satisfaction.  Activities for most people are directed at efficiency and productivity in an environment that makes clear that the trade-off is money and not a real belonging to the success of any enterprise. Money cannot buy everything, and what it buys is meaningless if the cost for obtaining it deprives us of our sense of humanity. On the other hand, today people are affected by the consequences of the recent financial crisis. We are feeling unsafe and insecure without access to basic needs such as jobs, health care, a pension fund, and recreation.   Stress is part of our lives, it has always been. Our bodies are capable of handling stress and making it part of the tools that enable us to advance in both boring and demanding tasks. When we perceive an event as stressful our bodies react with a complex of emotional, psychological and physiological responses than in the anc...

Indoor Edible Gardening

Let’s face it, we all need fresh vegetables in our diets for healthy bodies. The food we harvest from our own outdoor summer gardens is cheaper, tastes better, and is less likely to be genetically modified than the food we buy at the store. Then the winter sets in, and our beautiful garden dies off. We are forced to by our produce in the grocery store. These edibles have probably been shipped halfway across the country or even imported. This produce may have been picked several days ago, may have been picked too early to taste good, or may have even been genetically modified to stay fresher while being shipped. Maybe this is you standing in the produce isle wishing for spring planting season, or maybe, you don’t even have the luxury of a summer garden in your urban dwelling and you just wish you had an opportunity to grow your own fresh produce. Why not grow your garden indoors? It’s not as impossible or as expensive as you think to create an indoor garden. Some people don’t grow a ...

Can You Discover A Brain Birth Defect Later In Life?

A brain Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) is a tangle of abnormal blood vessels connecting arteries and veins in the brain. A brain AVM can look a little like seaweed on the bottom of the ocean, where all the vessels are tangled up with each other. Symptoms usually occur as early as 10 years old, right up to 40. Over time, brain AVM’s damage brain tissue. Once a person reaches middle-aged, the AVM usually doesn't cause any problems. Researchers believe that AVM’s are present from fetal development, but can stay dormant for many years, and may never show themselves. Normally, the heart sends oxygenated blood to your brain through arteries. Arteries slow blood flow by passing it through a series of progressively smaller networks of blood vessels, ending with capillaries, which slowly deliver oxygen through walls to the surrounding tissues. The organ depleted blood then passes into small blood vessel's and into larger veins that drain blood from the brain and returns it to...

Popoular TV Shows That Have Driven Their Fanbases Nuts

It's likely true that no television series is perfect. Some shows, however, have managed to be great enough to build a loyal following, and in turn they crush the followers that love them. This has happened many times over the years, many times involving a romantic pairing. Here are some examples of this. Beware of spoilers. How I Met Your Mother Full disclosure, I was never a big fan of this series. It could be funny at times, but often I found the humor overrated and Neil Patrick Harris' character to be one of the most unlikeable I've ever seen. Still, the series garnered a loyal group of viewers. Many of the aforementioned viewers were not very pleased at all with how the show wrapped up. Most of the events of the final season were basically crammed into two days, the marriage between the popular couple of Barney and Robin fell apart, the mother that the whole series was based around died and the unpopular couple of Ted and Robin was reunited. [1]  No, not a very ...

How to Practice Mindfulness in Daily Life

In a world of materialism and sensory overload it can be easy to get overwhelmed by the ups and downs of life. Mindfulness can help to develop a more balanced state of mind as well as enriching our experiences. Being mindful is an attitude. It consists of awareness and emotional detachment. We need to be aware of the world around us and the reactions (both physically and mentally) that these create. With an awareness of the things around us we learn to accept situations without becoming too emotional attached. We can develop good habits of reacting calmly to situations without getting stressed. We learn to let go and observe objectively so that we can accept and enjoy each moment. What is Being Mindful? To understand mindfulness we need to look at three aspects. The breathing, the physical actions of the body and mental thoughts of the mind (along with the emotions they bring).  The breath is what ties us to our living existence. It connects our body and mind. Yet usually ...
